On June 22 and 23, Berryville Main Street hosted the annual Bike Virginia Tour. Almost 2,000 bicyclists participated in event. This was the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Bike Virginia Tour. The participants were housed in local motels, bed and breakfasts, and over a thousand camped on the grounds of Clarke County High School.
In order to accommodate this large event, Main Street Berryville needed dozens of volunteers to assist with the various activities. Post 41 volunteered to help with the Wine Tasting and to serve as floating information guides at the camp and various events. Legionnaires Dev, Morrison, Warren Dilandro, Sam Mansfield, Doug Barth, George Maxwell, Bill Overbey, Larry Hardesty, Briana Kelly, Al Dunsmore, Bob Ferrebee, Jeff Focer, John Harris, Jon Joyce, and Hack Chappel volunteered for duty.
Even though the severe thunderstorms we experienced on the first day of the event reduced the participation in many of the activities, the second day was beautiful and a lot of fun. A portion of downtown Berryville’s Main Street adjacent to Rose Hill Park was closed to traffic and the bicyclists were treated to a party including open-air dining, a beer garden, wine tasting, vendors, and music. There was even a birthday cake and free cupcakes in honor of Bike Virginia’s twenty-five birthday.
This was a great community service project for Post 41 and a good venue to promote The American Legion. It was also a much needed economic boost for our local restaurants and merchants. Thanks to everyone who assisted.
